For the first time in over a decade, eating disorder legislation has been introduced into Congress by Representatives Ted Duetch (D-Fla.) and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.). Known as the Anna Westin Act of 2015, this bipartisan legislation is designed to combat eating disorders.
The legislation is named after Anna Westin, who was suffering from anorexia. Her doctor recommended immediate hospitalization due to her low body weight. The insurance company, however, told her parents to take her home because the treatment wasn’t medically necessary – something many people suffering from eating disorders face. This eventually led to Anna’s death.
The below video expands upon the legislation. Let’s celebrate this first step towards eating disorder legislation.
