| What is Bulimia Nervosa? |

Bulimia Nervosa is defined by binge eating behaviors coupled with compensatory behaviors. These compensatory methods include vomiting, laxative use, excessive exercise, and self-starvation. Such behaviors are utilized with the intent to compensate for binge eating behaviors. Binge eating is defined as the consumption of excessive amounts of food in concordance with a perceived loss of control. This disorder is fueled by a deep concern with body image and shape. As a result of these behaviors, electrolyte imbalance can cause irregular heartbeat and may lead to total heart failure. The esophagus is at risk for tears or ruptures, gastric and bowel problems are common, and tooth decay is prevalent. The majority of those suffering from Bulimia Nervosa may maintain what others may perceive as an average body weight. Symptoms include:
